Benefits For Your Health

Where do cannabinoids come from?

Cannabinoids can come from two places – our body and plants. In our bodies, cannabinoids are an active chemical compound that interacts with receptors through the body to encourage homeostasis and balance.

The cannabinoid receptors are part of the endocannabinoid system or ECS (see next question for more information) which regulates many physiological processes including pain management, immune strength, sleep, appetite, and mood. Cannabinoids like CBD are able to elicit their healing effects by interacting with our endocannabinoid system.

What is the endocannabinoid system (ECS)? Why is it important?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is responsible for regulating our body processes and functions. This system relates to our immune system, appetite, metabolism, memory, sleep, and moods, otherwise known as homeostasis. In Layman’s terms, this means, the ECS is responsible for the body to maintain itself and function in a proper environment. The term endo means “within” and cannabinoid refers to a chemical compound that fits into cannabinoid receptors. Two main receptors of the ECS are CB1 and CB2 as they help our bodies with an array of processes for healthy living. In order for the body to function properly, one must maintain an adequate level of cannabinoids. Theories suggest when there is a lack of cannabinoids, diseases and symptoms can develop. For example, studies have shown that auto-immune diseases such as diabetes, lupus, cancer, multiple sclerosis (and other auto-immune diseases) have developed due to an imbalance in the endocannabinoid system.
